Little Sister and Little Horse

I have a younger sister named Malin. We're not blood-related nor have we grown up together, but she is still my sister to me. So there. She turned 18 in May, got her driving-license a month ago and she got her car this weekend. Go Malin! Although that's not the point.

Malin loves horses and horses love her. As far as I can tell. My older sister also loves horses but unfortunately she's allergic to them. Still, she's the one with the expertise. So you really shouldn't listen to me when it comes to horses. Anyway. Malin has been involved with Icelandic horses for quite sometime and she's really amazing to watch when she's handling them. I think she's awesome. And she is, that's not just me imagining things. She helps out a lot at the stable, and even helping the owners with all kinds of things, like working at their shop. Long story short, she's very passionate about and really good with horses. I admire her immensely for that.

In April this year, Malin was able to buy a beautiful Icelandic horse named Gnýr. I can't even imagine how that could have felt. I mean, when I found out I was thrilled for her, jumping up and down with joy and excitement. 'Cause I honestly feel that if anyone should have her own horse companion it should be her. She deserves it. And with her love and dedication, Gnýr is one of the luckiest horses in that stable.

Then I met Gnýr. I had heard a lot about him from both Malin and her mother, as well as some bits here and there from my father and older sister so I had a somewhat idea of how he is as a person in advance. Gnýr is lovely, a headstrong, 13 years old, gorgeous gelding (castrated male in horse terms). They fit together perfectly. I think it's true what they say, animals choose you as much as you choose them. I like watching them together, but since I have a very healthy respect for horses I don't do so very often.

Malin & Gnýr

However.
This weekend, Malin entered her first competition, competing in the events of "four gaits" (fyrgång) and tölt (a gait unique to Icelandic horses) in the category of 'young rider'. I have little interest in horses, sprung mostly from the fact that I am allergic as well, but I do have an interest in my sister and Gnýr, so of course I went to cheer her on. ^^
It was fun. I mean, really, I had fun. There were lots of other beautiful horses and I fell completely in love with a horse called Lýsingur. He was gorgeous. And there was this wee tinytiny little girl that was the only one in the "junior" category yet still managed to get disqualified for not being able to rein in her horse. After the finals, not only was I able to distinguish the horses from each other but I also recognized the different gaits that were displayed. I was proud of myself when I noticed that. ^^
In the end Malin got 4.0 in tölt and 5.0 in four gaits, both scores earning her 2nd places with only 0.1 differing between her and 1st place both times! I thought that sucked, because she rocked that course track. But she's happy so I'm happy too. :)
